Storage Devices

Storage devices refer to hardware components or mediums used for the storage of digital information. They are crucial in computing in saving, retrieving, and managing data. Storage devices vary by type depending upon the purpose they are meant to perform-a larger capacity, faster speed, or superior portability.

Types of Storage Devices
1. Primary Storage
Volatile: Data is lost as soon as the device is switched off.
Examples:
RAM (Random Acceses Memory): A temporary memory used for active processes.
2. Secondary Storage
Non-volatile: The data remains in memory even when the device is turned off.
Examples:
Hard Disk Drive (HDD): Magnetic storage with large capacity but it's slow.
Solid State Drive (SSD): It is much faster, durable, and efficient as compared to HDDs.
Hybrid Drives: Balances between HDD and SSD technologies.

3. Portable Storage
Optimized for portability and data transfer.
Examples:
USB Flash Drives: Small, hard, and very popular for file transferring.
External HDDs/SSDs: Ideal for large capacity and backup.
Memory Cards (SD, microSD): Commonly used in cameras, Smartphones, etc.
4. Optical Storage
Data storage with the help of laser technology.
Examples:
CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs: These are primarily used for multimedia and archiving purposes.
5. Cloud Storage
Data stored remotely on servers accessed over the internet.
Examples
Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, OneDrive
6. Network Storage
Network storage systems- The use of a central location for holding storage.
Examples
NAS (Network Attached Storage): Shared storage for multiple devices.
SAN (Storage Area Network): Storage solutions in a high-speed enterprise network.
